Does the algorithm rule you?
It rules me. Or it used to.
I’ve seen many creators and coaches hustling and burning out from being on social media. I did too.
So how do you stay on track with building your business and target clients?
Chasing the Algorithm vs Audience
Recently I underwent a huge one that took me offline for over four months.
The crazy part is that I was creating to keep up with the algorithm- Feed Photos, Carousels, Reels, etc.. It was not getting audiences to subscribe to my YouTube channel. The even crazier part is that I barely made content during that time because I was so overwhelmed about what type of content to make simply so I could grow my brand to sell my courses. It was like a conceptual Rubick’s cube and although I had great ideas, finding time to implement both video and marketing scripts had me at a mental tug-o-war.
Grow your income with my Patreon monetization tips!
Sadly, this content i was straining over was not even for growing my YouTube channel or my blog — the platforms that I monetize and which are evergreen content. Social media does not have the same benefits as YouTube. I was straining over social media’s disposable content, so that the algorithm would share me more. There was no ROI on it, although these days social media platforms are attempting to woo creators with news of monetization of their content. But the bottom line is that, I labored over ideas that were not evergreen or which were not searchable references to grow traffic.
My burnout was enlightening though.
Prioritizing Audience
I came to discover that during that four months, I lost very few followers. The Patreon fans I grew to support my creator work still supported me. I lost under 200 followers on Instagram and just as little on Facebook.
The interesting fact: I lost more followers over the previous months when I was actively posting.
🤍They don’t care if you are on social media every day. Because they are not on social media every day.
🤍They don’t care if you do photos, stories, reels or Lives. They just want to see you show up.
🤍When your content clicks with your audiences, your fans will come looking for you and their engagement will help your engagement to grow.
🤍 When your content does not click with audiences or they do not find value in it, your followers will consider unfollowing you.
🤍 When audiences really love your work, they will fund it so you can create more.
This means, you must create for your audiences.
❌Not the algorithm.
While I’m sure I will still abide by certain terms of social media algorithms, I think twice about where I place the priority of my energy. I am not giving into the chase or the burnout. At the root of it all, content strategy is important. What you put out to your audiences matters. More than the platform you put it on.
So take time creating content with value.
