Touch is one of the first inspirations of The Listening Pillow videos. During this period, I'd been obsessed with issues concerning memory and the "new narrative" (or the new media narrative). Touch has 2 versions- one told from a male perspective, the other is told from a female one. Embracing the theme of memory, desire & death of a relationship, each narrator wrestles with polarized experiences of love, identity, loneliness and loss and ultimate question- Where does love live after its gone?
In the HE version, the male counterpart relates love to a
chess game, conditioning
himself to "the rules of the game"
and externalizing his experience of intimacy and loss. In
the SHE version, the female counterpart speaks openly- her
relationship to herself and other are clearly internalized as emotion.
The notion of Touch can be interpreted in many ways-- physical/ emotional intimacy with another, internal longing and its expression through self-gratification.
