Duration  00:03:56 (original)
Dir. Christine Kaaloa
Installation video, performance & sound works

“Movement and the human body is a universal instrument of communication, like a mouth…everything it utters, whether minute or banal is an awakening of speech.”

Symphony attempts to explore, decode and deconstruct movement-based language, which secretly express and codify societal behavior.

A background in dance, Kaaloa’s Symphony explores the poetry of language in movement that shapes social and personal spaces of language, by extracting, dissecting, slicing through, cross-secting, and reassembling pedestrian gestures as if it’s a Rubick’s cube.  These recordings feel transitory and ephemeral caught midstream between subjects in social and private communication. Some gestures hint at emotion then quickly withdraws from revealing its entireity. The viewer always remains on the outside of the story, never penetrating the superficial layer.

As a collective piece, it is a collage dance, attempting to break down extract sound from the silent gestures.

The secondary layer is the sound design, comprised of snippets of conversations stepping over each other, overlapping, competing for clarity, individuality and distinction. Shortened, sped up and amplified, they grow, distort and build up into a noise which begins to resemble ducks quacking

The goal of the piece begs the question: What is Sound and its meaning?
